Suez IWS Chemical (Givors): BLE Traceability of Hazardous Waste
Suez (Givors, France) is an ATEX-classified site specialized in the management of industrial waste. Its operations include recycling, the treatment of hazardous and non-hazardous waste, as well as water management and decontamination, all while adhering to current environmental regulations.
Following the Lubrizol fire in 2019, the French government strengthened regulations to improve accident management on ICPE and Seveso sites—particularly regarding stock control, awareness of stored substances, and stricter requirements for storing flammable and combustible materials. These measures also extend to Seveso sites and include consideration of risks to the surrounding environment.
✅ Strengthened regulations following the Lubrizol fire (2019)
✅ Focus on ICPE and Seveso sites: stock management, substances, and flammable products
✅ Consideration of risks to the surrounding environment
Project Objective:
Suez (Givors) must provide a precise daily report of its waste inventory, including quantities, locations (with a site map), and detailed information on the waste (categories, types, risks, etc.). They must also implement a system that triggers alerts if weight limits or maximum storage durations for waste within buildings are exceeded.
✅ Know the daily and real-time status of waste inventory.
✅ Have full knowledge of stored materials by waste category and quantity.
✅ Be able to remove waste from site buildings once the maximum authorized threshold has been exceeded.
The BLE Solution Dedicated to ATEX Zones:
The waste traceability solution at the Suez site in Givors uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology and consists of:
➡️ BLE Trackers: Attached to containers, they provide precise geolocation (indoor/outdoor), resistance to harsh environments, long battery life, secure communication, and an IP67 waterproof casing.
➡️ BLE LoRa Gateways: Automatically capture the movement of trackers in defined areas and send the data to the software via a dedicated network.
➡️ Atex Mobile Terminals: Equipped with the UBI Mobile application, they enable the following operations: pairing a tracker with a container’s QR Code, as well as performing consultation tasks (location, reports, inventories, etc.).
➡️ NB IoT Measurement Sensors: Measure the stock volume of “solid” areas to ensure accurate, real-time monitoring.
➡️ UBI Cloud NextGen Platform: Processes and compiles data for use by Suez (inventory, movement history, location on the map, KPIs, alerts, etc.). UBI Cloud NextGen is a SaaS application that offers precise and tailored services without local installation. The solution is customized for the project, with an adapted object structure, developed interfaces with their ERP, and an interactive visualization plugin integrating Suez’s data.
Benefits:
The BLE technology deployed at Suez enables real-time tracking of waste containers at the Givors site. This provides precise waste localization, optimizes stock management, ensures compliance with regulatory standards, and enhances operational efficiency.
✅ Compliance with regulations.
✅ Optimization of inventory times and stock management.
✅ Reduction of accident risks.
